SLR's new modded lens delivers the most accurate and immersive image yet

NEW [Oct 2023]: Canon has lodged a patent for a new dual fisheye lens with an adjustable IPD, which could resolve the IPD and scale issues of the current RF 5.2mm lens. However, it is simply a patent so there is no set date for when, or even if, this product will go on sale. It does however show that Canon is aware of the issues and working to counter them in future.

This new mod is a lens that can be used with VR movie cameras of a potential resolution of up to 12k. Specifically, it is a modified Canon RF 5.2mm Dual Fisheye Lens, with a more natural IPD (Interpupillary Distance) of 66mm, compared to Canon's stock IPD of 60mm. Canon originally placed the lenses at the lower end of the average IPD, which gave the impression of looking out at the world with a smaller head size.
Thanks to this larger IPD, visible objects now look much more realistic and believable in size. This lens replaces SLR's 10K rig project, which was retired for multiple reasons (see below).
Here you can see examples of still images through both the modified lens with the improved IPD, next to images from the stock camera. The image on the left is from our modified lens and the image on the right is the stock image.
You will notice that the difference in scaling is more obvious the closer the subject is to the camera. The modded lens gives a more natural and appealing look, much more realistic and lifesize - thanks to the improved IPD. However, the image from the stock lens shows the model as larger and less realistic - which can break immersion in VR.

You should feel that the mod lens footage is more comfortable to watch and the model looks more realistic.
The top priority is getting the scale and stereo effect right. Quality is paramount. We ditched explorations into a previous in-house rig as the image quality was not good enough. The footage was too dark, we saw no great improvements in terms of scale and stereo image, plus the camera was overly bulky, which would negatively impact on filming.
