SLR Fisheye is our specialized filming and processing technique that captures ultra-wide 190º or even 200º in a single shot. Unlike other VR filmmakers, which convert footage into 180º equirectangular projection (losing 10º of field of view in the process), SLR Fish-Eye ensures that every pixel is accurately mapped to DeoVR’s projection mesh, preserving the full camera FOV. Fisheye achieves perfect pixel-matching, making sure the entire native 190º FOV is available to the viewer - no unnecessary cropping, no artificial distortion.
Why 190º Fish-Eye Feels More Realistic
That extra 10º of FOV may seem small, but it makes a huge difference in immersion. Not only do you enjoy the bigger field of view, which is a great advantage in VR, but it also matches the natural slight movements of a human head. With 190º Fish-Eye, you never “lose” part of the scene, unlike with 180º equirectangular, where subtle head movements can push parts of the view outside the visible area. This extra FOV matches human vision more accurately, preventing unnatural cut-offs and enhancing depth perception.
SLR Fisheye captures footage in 8K resolution (or 200º on ZCam setups). Meanwhile, many producers “lose” resolution by converting 190º camera footage into 180º equirectangular—effectively dropping from 8192×4096 down to around 7760×3880. With our approach, you keep all those extra pixels you paid for.
Instead of distorting the footage with conventional 180º equirectangular projection, with fisheye, we match each pixel to DeoVR’s projection mesh, ensuring better clarity and a more natural appearance.
